Hengaw – Friday, January 1, 2026

Mohammad Peyghami, a 60-year-old Kurdish man from Oshnavieh (Shno), has been detained for nearly three weeks and suffered a heart attack as a result of torture while in custody. He was transferred to a medical facility in Urmia and underwent surgery without his family being informed. Peyghami is also a former prisoner of war from the eight-year Iran–Iraq war.

Information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights indicates that Peyghami was arrested on Sunday, December 14, 2025, by Iranian government forces on Seyed Abad Street (Seydavi) in Oshnavieh without the presentation of a warrant.

More than 20 days after his arrest, he remains denied contact with his family. Despite suffering a heart attack and undergoing surgery, his family has not been permitted to visit or communicate with him.

According to detailed reports, Peyghami was subjected to severe pressure and torture during detention. As a result of serious heart complications and cardiac arrest, he was hospitalized for more than four days under the supervision of specialist physicians at Seyyed al-Shohada Hospital in Urmia and Shams Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

The surgical procedure was carried out without the knowledge or consent of his family and under the supervision of government authorities.

Governmental and military bodies have been involved in the case, and their conduct indicates that the primary objective is the fabrication of charges against this Kurdish citizen.

Court documents show that charges of “cooperation with and membership in Kurdish parties” have been brought against Peyghami. Branch One of the Oshnavieh Revolutionary Court prosecutor’s office issued a two-month temporary detention order without holding a formal trial.

Mohammad Peyghami was a prisoner of war during the eight-year Iran–Iraq war. In previous years, several of his relatives have also been arrested on political charges and have served lengthy prison sentences.
