Hengaw – Friday, May 30, 2026

Iranian authorities have sentenced Esmaeil Ramezanpour, a resident of Yazd originally from Fars Province, to death following his arrest during the January 2026 protests.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the 38-year-old was recently sentenced to death by the Yazd Revolutionary Court on charges of “waging war against God” (moharebeh), “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against the country's internal security,” and “intentional destruction of public property through the arson of the Yazd Municipality building with the intent of confronting the state.” The verdict has been formally communicated to him inside Yazd Central Prison.

Informed sources told Hengaw that Ramezanpour was arrested by Iranian security forces in Yazd during the January protests and subsequently transferred to a security detention facility in the city.

Sources familiar with the case stated that he was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture while held by security institutions in an effort to extract forced confessions. Following the conclusion of interrogations, he was transferred to Yazd Central Prison.

The death sentence was issued after proceedings that sources described as fundamentally unfair and lacking transparency. Ramezanpour was denied access to a lawyer of his choosing and was deprived of the basic guarantees of a fair trial.

The court based its ruling exclusively on reports submitted by security institutions and on confessions allegedly obtained under torture.
