Amir Mohammad Mojallal Choubari sentenced to death over January protests

Amir Mohammad Mojallal Choubari, a 22-year-old Gilak man from Choubar, Gilan Province, who was arrested during the January 2026 protests in Tehran, has been sentenced to death by the Iranian judiciary. He is currently held in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

Based on information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mojallal Choubari, a political prisoner and one of those detained during the January protests in Tehran, has been sentenced to death.

He had previously been charged by Branch 33 of Tehran’s Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, known as the Shahid Moghaddas Security Prosecutor’s Office, with “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security,” “disrupting public order and peace through participation in protests,” “attempted intentional murder by attempting to run over officers,” and “resisting government forces.”

Mojallal Choubari was arrested during a protest gathering in Tehran on Friday, January 2, 2026. Following interrogation, he was transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

The branch that issued the death sentence and the legal basis for the ruling have not yet been disclosed.
