Kurdish man in Bukan sentenced to one year in prison

Rashid Rahimi, a Kurdish man from Bukan, has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran for participating in special Newroz ceremonies in Kurdistan.
According to a report obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of Bukan recently convicted Rahimi of “propaganda against the state,” sentencing him to one year of imprisonment. The sentence was officially communicated to Rahimi in recent days, and he has been instructed to report to the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Bukan in the coming days to begin serving his sentence.
Rashid Rahimi was initially arrested on Thursday, May 9, 2024, by security forces without an arrest warrant and with the use of violence. After completing interrogation, he was released temporarily on bail pending trial.
Rahimi was arrested alongside two other individuals, identified as Shahram Nanava and a man known as Zaher (last name unspecified), both residents of Bukan. The arrests were reportedly connected to their participation in Newroz celebrations in the Kurdistan region.
