Political prisoner Arghavan Fallahi sentenced to death on charge of “baghi”
Hengaw – Friday, July 3, 2026
The Iranian judiciary has sentenced 24-year-old political prisoner Arghavan Fallahi, currently held in Evin Prison, to death, continuing its pattern of imposing harsh and retaliatory sentences against political activists.
According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Fallahi’s death sentence was recently issued by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, and formally communicated to her. Citing Article 287 of the Islamic Penal Code, the court convicted her of “baghi (armed rebellion against the state) through membership in opposition groups and participation in armed activities.”
Following her arrest, Fallahi was held for several months in Wards 209, operated by the Ministry of Intelligence, and 241, operated by the Judiciary’s Intelligence Protection Organization, in Evin Prison, where she was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture. Hengaw has learned that security agencies sought to extract forced confessions and build a case against her by accusing her of involvement in an plot to assassinate two judges, Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini.
Fallahi was arrested by Iranian security forces in early February 2025. Following the events at Evin Prison in June 2026, she was initially transferred to Great Tehran Penitentiary, then exiled to Qarchak Prison, before eventually being returned to the women’s ward of Evin Prison.
Fallahi had previously been arrested alongside her father in November 2022 during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement. She was later sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, to two years’ imprisonment on charges of “assembly and collusion” and “propaganda against the state.” She was released after completing her sentence in full.
