Omid Faraji, a 41-year-old Kurdish man from the village of Ney in Marivan, was detained following a summons by the Iranian judiciary. He was transferred to Marivan Prison to begin serving a four-year prison sentence.

According to reports obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Faraji had been summoned last week to court for a hearing regarding his legal case. During the session—without prior notice—he was sentenced to three years in prison for a new charge and an additional two years for an older case. The total five-year sentence was ultimately reduced to four years after mitigation and he was immediately taken into custody.

Faraji, who is illiterate and unfamiliar with his legal rights, was unable to mount an effective defense, which contributed to the severity of the sentence issued against him.

Previously, on Sunday, September 29, 2024, Faraji was temporarily released on bail of 1.3 billion tomans after enduring approximately 43 days of detention and interrogation.

He had initially been arrested on Sunday, August 18, 2024, when he was lured to a local bank by Iran’s Intelligence Department under false pretenses and detained on the spot.

Faraji is the sole guardian of his young child, and his imprisonment has raised serious concerns about the child's welfare.
