Execution of Afghan national Ahmadullah Esmaeili carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison

The death sentence of Ahmadullah Esmaeili, a 31-year-old Afghan national, was carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. Esmaeili had been convicted of premeditated murder by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran. At least 36 Afghan nationals have been executed in Iranian prisons since the beginning of 2025.
 
According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the execution took place at dawn on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, inside Ghezel Hesar Prison. Esmaeili had been arrested and later sentenced to death following a murder conviction.
 
Iranian state media, particularly outlets affiliated with the judiciary, have not publicly acknowledged the execution.
 
Data from Hengaw’s Statistics and Documentation Center confirms that at least 36 Afghan nationals have been executed in Iran since the start of the current calendar year.
