Marivan Municipality employee Faraidun Rostami attempts self-immolation after pressure from security office
Hengaw – Sunday, November 16, 2025
Faraidun Rostami, a resident of Marivan and an employee of the Kanidinar Municipality, attempted to set himself on fire following what sources describe as sustained pressure and threats from the municipality’s security office (Herassat).
According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Sunday, November 16, 2025, Rostami — a long-serving municipal employee with a bachelor’s degree — self-immolated after repeated harassment by Herassat personnel at Kanidinar Municipality.
Hengaw has learned that Rostami’s colleagues managed to extinguish the flames, preventing his death. Shortly after the incident, security forces surrounded the municipality building and blocked any reporting or dissemination of information regarding the event.
An informed source told Hengaw that Rostami had been subjected to increasing pressure and degrading treatment by Shima Mohammadi, a Herassat officer at the municipality and the daughter of Karim Mohammadi, a member of the Marivan Intelligence Department. The source added that Rostami had previously been dismissed under pressure from the same official. After his reinstatement, he was not returned to his original post and was instead assigned to a supervisory position — and in recent days, was ordered to perform menial cleaning tasks, including sweeping the streets, circumstances that ultimately led to his self-immolation attempt.
Faraidun Rostami, who has six years of experience working in the municipality’s secretariat, had been dismissed six months ago due to pressure exerted by Shima Mohammadi. The dismissal severely affected his family’s livelihood and, according to the source, led to his wife’s forced abortion due to financial hardship. Although he was later reinstated following public criticism, he was not restored to his original role.
