Naji Sawari killed by Iranian government gunfire during protests in Ahvaz

Naji Sawari, an Arab man from Ahvaz, was killed after being shot directly by Iranian government forces during protests in the city.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Sawari—also known as “Abu Mithaq,” a 50-year-old resident of Ahvaz—was shot and killed during protests in the city. The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Informed sources said that Sawari was at his workplace selling fruit when he was struck in the neck by live ammunition fired by Iranian government forces. He later died as a result of his injuries.
