Sepehr Amirzadeh sentenced to death over January protests
Hengaw – Saturday, August 15, 2026
Sepehr Amirzadeh, a 23-year-old medical student and musician detained during the January protests, has been sentenced to death by the Iranian judiciary on the charge of “waging war against God” (moharebeh). He is currently held at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.
According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Amirzadeh, a native of Ramhormoz, Khuzestan province, and a medical student in Isfahan, was sentenced to death by a Revolutionary Court. His case is currently under review by the Supreme Court following an appeal against the sentence.
The precise basis for the death sentence remains unclear. However, Amirzadeh’s provision of medical assistance and first aid to protesters injured during the demonstrations has been cited in the judicial proceedings against him.
Iranian security forces arrested Amirzadeh at his home in Isfahan on January 13, 2026. Following interrogation, he was transferred to Dastgerd Prison, where he remains incarcerated.
Hengaw has learned that security agencies have pressured Amirzadeh’s family not to publicize his case.
