Kurdish student Tara Farhangian sentenced to prison, flogging, and exile

Tara Farhangian, a 21-year-old Kurdish student from Qorveh who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, has been sentenced by the Iranian judiciary to one year in prison, 31 lashes, two years of exile to Zabol, and a fine of 120 million tomans.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the sentences were recently issued by the Criminal and Revolutionary Courts of Qorveh and communicated to Farhangian, a physical education student at Hamedan University.

Hengaw has learned that Branch 102 of the Qorveh Criminal Court sentenced Farhangian to one year in prison, 31 lashes, and two years of exile to Zabol, Sistan and Baluchestan province, on charges of “disturbing public order and peace” and “resisting officers in the performance of their duties.”

She was also fined 120 million tomans by the Qorveh Revolutionary Court on charges of “propaganda against the state” and “assembly and collusion to commit a crime against internal security.”

Farhangian was arrested by security forces during the January 2026 protests and was later temporarily released on bail.
