Houshedar Zarei, a Baha'i adherent and martial art coach from Shiraz was recently detained and temporarily released on bail, has been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz to six years of imprisonment, social restrictions and a ban on leaving the country.
According to a report received by the Hengaw organization for Human Rights, on Monday June 26, 2023, Houshedar Zarei, a 44-year-old Judo coach, was sentenced by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz, presided by chief Judge Sadati. convicted of "propaganda against the regime," to one year of imprisonment, and "promoting sectarianism in favor of anti-government groups," leading to five years of imprisonment under the supervision of the electronic surveillance system within a 1,000-meter radius of his residence.
Additionally, the court imposed a five-year social restrictions, a ban on online activities, and a two-year exit ban with revoking his passport. He was also ordered to pay a cash fine of 500 million Rials.
If the aforementioned verdict is confirmed by the appellate court, according to the Accumulation of Sentences article in Iranian penal code, the five-year imprisonment sentence for Mr. Zarei will be enforced.
Houshedar Zarei was detained by government forces in Shiraz on April 29th, 2023. He was temporarily released from Adelabad prison on May 21st, after posting a bail of 1.2 billion Tomans, waiting trial.
