Sohrab Avizkan, a resident of Mahabad arrested during the Women, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement, has received a three-year imprisonment and three-year exile sentence from the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was recently apprehended and subsequently transferred to Mahabad prison for the execution of his sentence.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights' report on Monday, December 11, 2023, Avizkan, a father of one, was taken into custody on Saturday, December 9, 2023, following a summons by the branch responsible for executing verdicts at the General and Revolutionary Court Office in Mahabad.
Having been convicted by the Mahabad Revolutionary Court, Avizkan faced charges of 'assembly and collusion with the intention of disrupting public order' and 'participating in protests,' leading to a three-year imprisonment and three-year forced residence in Zanjan.
Hengaw quoted a source close to Avizkan's family, revealing that he endured beatings and underwent physical and mental torture in the IRGC intelligence detention center to extract a confession. Throughout the interrogation and detention, he was denied the right to access a lawyer or family visits.
Avizkan was initially arrested by the IRGC intelligence department on Saturday, November 19, 2022, and subsequently transferred to Mahabad prison after interrogation.
