In a recent legal development, Fatemeh Sheikhi, a 22-year-old Kurdish activist from Abdanan in the province of Ilam, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic.

According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, Fatemeh Sheikhi was convicted by Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of Abdanan, presided over by Chief Judge Mohammad Gholami, on charges of "insulting sanctities" and was subsequently sentenced to one year behind bars.

It has come to light that Fatemeh Sheikhi, a civil activist from Abdanan, was summoned to the revolutionary prosecutor's office in Abdanan in October 2023 following the sharing of several stories on her Instagram account. After undergoing interrogation and temporary detention, she was released on bail pending the completion of legal proceedings.

Documents obtained by Hengaw reveal that the one-year imprisonment sentence against Fatemeh Sheikhi has been suspended for a period of two years.

In response to this verdict, Fatemeh Sheikhi has stated that she has been convicted of "opposing the death penalty."
