During the Ilam popular resistance, Kazhal Watanpour, a law student pursuing her master's degree and a supporter of women's and children's rights, was arrested and given a prison sentence. She has now been transferred to Ilam Central Prison to carry out her sentence.

According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Kazhal Watanpour was transferred to Ilam Central Prison on Saturday, January 28, 2023, after being summoned to the Ilam court.

She was given a two-year and six-month prison term by the Criminal and Revolutionary Court of Ilam for offenses like disrupting public order and peace, spreading false information, engaging in activity that undermines the system, conspiring to harm internal security, and working with enemy networks. She was ultimately given a one-year prison term, six months of probation, a two-year travel ban, and the cancellation of her passport in the appeals court.

It is worth mentioning that she is a master's student of international law who has recently given free legal counsel to women, particularly injured women and children, as well as authored articles about legal knowledge of women's rights issues for local publications.

On September 21, 2022, Kazhal Watanpour was detained by plainclothes officers on her way home in Ilam, near the Children's Park library, and taken to one of the city's security detention facilities.
