Nayeb Askari, a Kurdish political prisoner from Urmia, was sentenced to death by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the charge of Moharebeh after more than two years of detention, and the said sentence was officially communicated to him.

According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for human rights, Nayeb Askari, 46, from Urmia was recently sentenced to death by the second branch of the Revolutionary Court of Urmia on the charge of Moharebeh through membership in the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK).

According to a source close to Askari's family, the ruling was officially communicated to the political prisoner's lawyer on Saturday, April 15th, 2023.

It should be mentioned that Nayeb Askari suffers from kidney stone disease and stomach upset, and last year he was hospitalized for 4 days outside the prison and his kidney stones were removed with a laser. But his kidney is stone-forming and due to the inappropriateness of the drinking water in the prison, his disease has relapsed and he is suffering from kidney discomfort now and is deprived of medical services.

Nayeb Askari, who was previously a member of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) in the Kurdistan Region, after separating from this party and receiving a letter of protection from the IRGC, on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, he was introduced to the information of the IRGC and arrested. He returned to Iran with his family from the Kurdistan region on March 20, 2021.

Hengaw has been informed that the IRGC did not give the security letter to Askari's family in writing and they did so verbally through one of Mr. Askari's acquaintances.  They were informed about this action of the IRGC during their arrival in their hometown. The Guards Corps have now announced that we have not given the security letter.

Nayeb Askari, after three months of detention in the solitary cell of the intelligence detention center of Urmia, and while he was severely tortured and harassed, he was transferred to the central prison of Urmia, and since then he has been kept in this prison without the right to use leave.

It should be noted that Nayeb Askari's wife was pregnant while he was detained, and in the past two years, he has gone on hunger strike several times in the central prison of Urmia to protest against the deprivation of medical services and also his indecision.
