The execution sentence of an inmate identified as Abbas Aghayi from Tabriz and a married couple from Julfa (East Azerbaijan province) on charges related to drug offenses was carried out in Tabriz Central Prison. The execution of Abbas Aghayi is considered to be the first execution sentence implemented in the year 1403 (the Iranian new year).

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, the execution sentence of 36-year-old Abbas Aghayi from Tabriz was carried out in the central prison of this city.

According to the Iran Human Rights Organization (IHR), Abbas Aghayi was detained 28 months ago on charges related to drug offenses. He had shouldered the responsibility of his underage siblings following the demise of his father and had been engaged just four months prior to his arrest.

Earlier, on March 19, 2024, the execution sentence of a married couple from Julfa, sentenced jointly on drug offense charges, was carried out in Tabriz Central Prison.
