Kurdish student Summayeh Shafiei attempted Suicide, due to Pressure and Threats from University Authorities

Summayeh Shafiei, a Kurdish student from Sanandaj attending Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences, reportedly attempted suicide following repeated pressure and threats from the head of her department and the head of the health faculty. Her condition is reported to be unfavorable.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Monday, June 10, 2024, Summayeh Shafiei, a 24-year-old environmental health student, attempted to end her life by jumping from the top of a partially constructed building near the Sanandaj Health Faculty.

A student at the university reported that Summayeh Shafiei had a verbal altercation with the director of the Environmental Health Department concerning her internship. Following this incident, she was pressured by the dean of the faculty to withdraw from the current academic semester.

She has been transferred to the hospital for medical treatment, where her condition is currently reported as unfavorable.
