Hengaw; Sunday, August 4, 2024
Maryam Mehrabi, sister of Mahmoud Mehrabi, a political prisoner sentenced to death, has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Isfahan, for advocating her brother's case.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan sentenced Maryam Mehrabi, the sister of Mahmoud Mehrabi, a political prisoner sentenced to death, to six years of imprisonment.
Hajar (Mahan) Mehrabi, another sister of Mahmoud Mehrabi, announced in a video that the Iranian judiciary secretly sentenced her sister to prison without informing the family or even allowing her the right to a lawyer.
Hengaw has learned that Maryam Mehrabi was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of "inciting people to war and killing with the intention of disturbing public security and propaganda against the regime." This comes after Maryam Mehrabi was detained by security forces following her advocacy for her brother Mahmoud Mehrabi, a political prisoner sentenced to death.
On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Maryam Mehrabi, the sister of Mahmoud Mehrabi, was arrested by security forces at her home in Isfahan, along with her two young children, Setareh Bakhtiarvand, 11, and Sogol Bakhtiarvand, 8.
Maryam Mehrabi's arrest occurred after she announced in a video message that she would self-immolate in front of the office of the Friday Prayer leader in the city of Mobarakeh, Isfahan province, if her brother's death sentence was not revoked.
Mahmoud Mehrabi, Maryam Mehrabi's 35-year-old brother and a political prisoner from the city of Mobarakeh, was previously sentenced to death by Branch 5 of the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan on charges of "corruption on earth."
This political prisoner was arrested by security forces in Isfahan on February 1, 2023, and was released on bail from Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan (central prison) on March 15. He was re-arrested by security forces and returned to prison just hours after his release.
