Tayyebeh Nazari Makiabadi, a retired teacher and the justice-seeking mother of Maryam Arvin, a lawyer who died following her detention during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Iranian judiciary.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Nazari Makiabadi, a resident of Sirjan in Kerman Province, was recently sentenced by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad to a total of five years in prison on charges including “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the state.”

According to the court verdict, the activities cited as evidence against her included traveling from Sirjan to Mashhad and participating in gatherings following calls circulated on social media, extensive online activity in support of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, and chanting protest slogans.

Nazari was arrested on Friday, December 12, 2025, during a raid by Iranian security forces on a memorial ceremony marking the seventh day after the death of Kurdish lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. She was detained along with at least 40 other civil and political activists and members of justice-seeking families, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, Sepideh Gholian, Aliyeh Motalebzadeh, Pouran Nazemi and members of the Alikordi family.

Nazari is the mother of Maryam Arvin, a young lawyer who was arrested in Sirjan during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in 2022 for providing legal assistance to detained protesters. Arvin died under suspicious circumstances shortly after being released on temporary leave from detention.
