Prisoner who committed suicided still executed posthumously in Birjand, Iran

The death sentence of Baloch prisoner Bahman Sheikh-Hosseini, who attempted suicide before the execution was carried out in Birjand Central Prison.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, in the early hours of Sunday, October 20, 2024, Bahman Sheikh-Hosseini, a 32-year-old father of three from Zahedan, was executed without being granted a final visit with his family.

The Baloch Activists Campaign reported that Sheikh-Hosseini attempted suicide by taking pills before his execution. Despite his critical physical condition, the authorities proceeded with the execution.

Sheikh-Hosseini had been arrested in February 2023 in Birjand on drug-related charges and was sentenced to death by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

As of the time of this report, the execution has not been officially announced by state or judiciary-affiliated media outlets.
