Concerning situation of Kurdish refugee couple in Turkey: Restricted visits and risk of deportation
Hengaw: Monday, November 11, 2024
Rashad Mohammadi and Azhin Hosseini (Fahmideh), a Kurdish political refugee couple, have been arrested by Turkish security forces for nearly eight months and are now held in distressing conditions in a temporary housing camp, facing the risk of deportation to Iran.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Rashad Mohammadi, from Kamyaran, and his wife, Azhin Hosseini from Sarvabad, both political activists, are currently being held at the Pahlavan Koy camp in Edirne, Turkey, under challenging conditions.
Hosseini reports that, since their recent transfer back to this camp a month ago, she has only been allowed to meet with her husband once, as he is being held alone in a separate room.
Earlier this year, Hengaw reported that Turkish authorities, shortly after transferring the couple to a deportation camp, forced them to provide fingerprints and signatures, raising concerns over their potential deportation.
The couple, aged 30 and 34, were previously political activists residing in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq but were compelled to leave due to pressure from security agencies of Islamic Republic of Iran.
They were initially arrested by Turkish police in early March and, after several relocations, remain in the camp under precarious circumstances.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights has expressed grave concern about the couple’s potential deportation to Iran, where they could face torture or other inhumane treatment from security forces. Hengaw calls on international human rights organizations, especially those focused on refugee protection, to urgently intervene in their case.
