Jalal Mohammadkarimi, a Kurdish man from Bukan who was arrested during the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, has been sentenced to ten years in prison by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s judiciary.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 101 of the Second Criminal Court in Bukan convicted Mohammadkarimi on charges of “possession of a weapon.” Documents obtained by Hengaw indicate that one-third of the sentence—approximately two years—was initially suspended.

Following an appeal, Branch 23 of the West Azerbaijan Court of Appeals reduced the sentence to two years and one day of enforceable imprisonment. The previous suspension of one-third of the sentence remains in effect under the new ruling.

Mohammadkarimi was arrested on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at his home in Bukan by security forces. He was later released on bail from Bukan Prison, pending the outcome of judicial proceedings.

In May 2025, he was summoned by the Sentence Enforcement Branch of the Bukan Court to begin serving his prison term.
