Hengaw – Saturday, May 24, 2025

Reza Maleki, a 37-year-old Kurdish prisoner from Harsin in Kermanshah (Kermashan) Province, died in Karaj’s Ghezel Hesar Prison following a prolonged illness and the denial of adequate medical treatment.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Maleki passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in Ward 2 of Unit 15 at Ghezel Hesar Prison due to complications from liver disease. Despite the severity of his condition, prison authorities failed to provide the necessary medical care.

A source close to the family reported that, although physicians had deemed Maleki’s condition terminal, he was denied compassionate release and the opportunity to spend his final days with his loved ones.

Maleki had been detained for over a year on drug-related charges. However, no court hearing had been held regarding his case at the time of his death.
