Hengaw - Thursday, June 12, 2025

Amjad Geryakhiz, a Kurdish labor activist from Sanandaj (Sna) and a member of the “No to Execution” campaign, has been sentenced by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s judiciary to two years and six months in prison.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the 42-year-old activist and father of two was sentenced by Branch One of the Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj. The court sentenced him to six months of discretionary imprisonment and an additional two years of suspended imprisonment on charges including “inciting shopkeepers to strike.”

The charges are linked to Geryakhiz’s alleged role in organizing the February 2024 strikes, which were held in protest against the death sentences issued for Pakhshan Azizi and Verisheh Moradi.

During his 35-day detention, Geryakhiz was denied all basic rights, including access to legal representation, phone calls, and necessary medication.

He was arrested on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, through the use of force and without the presentation of an arrest warrant. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the Intelligence Detention Center in Sanandaj and later moved to the city’s central prison.

On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Geryakhiz was released on bail pending the outcome of his legal proceedings.
