Father, 16-year-old daughter sentenced to prison, flogging over January protests

Behrouz Izanlou, a 43-year-old Kurdish man arrested during the January 2026 protests, and his 16-year-old daughter, Zeinab Izanlou, have been sentenced by the Iranian judiciary in Bojnord to a combined five years, three months and 15 days in prison, 80 lashes, and an 80 million-toman fine.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 103 of the Bojnord Criminal Court No. 2 recently issued the sentences and formally notified both defendants.

The court sentenced Behrouz Izanlou to four years and nine months in prison, 80 lashes, and an 80 million-toman fine on charges including "disobeying law enforcement officers while they were carrying out their duties" and "disrupting public order and peace through participation in protests." In the same case, his 16-year-old daughter, Zeinab Izanlou, was sentenced to six months and 15 days in prison.

Government forces arrested the father and daughter during a raid on their home in Bojnord on January 4, 2026, without presenting a warrant. After a period of detention in Bojnord Prison, Behrouz Izanlou was released on temporary bail set at 4 billion tomans. Zeinab Izanlou was also later released on temporary bail pending the outcome of her case.
