Ilam: Former Kurdish political prisoner Kianoush Cheraghi arrested alongside his wife Akram Sabzi

Hengaw – Tuesday, June 24, 2025
Kianoush Cheraghi, a 45-year-old Kurdish political activist from Dehloran, was arrested along with his wife, Akram Sabzi, by agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Intelligence Department. Following the arrest, Cheraghi was transferred to Ilam Prison, while Sabzi was released after several hours in custody upon payment of a monetary fine.
According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the couple was detained on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in Dehloran.
A reliable source reported that Sabzi was released after a few hours of detention and interrogation, following the payment of a 2.5 million toman fine. The total fine issued against her was 11 million tomans, part of which was suspended on the condition that she refrain from any activity on social media.
Cheraghi, however, was transferred to Ilam Prison without any formal charges, access to legal representation, or a bail order.
He had previously been sentenced to two years in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Dehloran on charges of “acting against national security.” After serving 14 months of his sentence, he was released on May 13, 2025, under a suspended ruling from Darreh Shahr Prison in Ilam Province.
It is worth noting that Cheraghi was also arrested on September 27, 2023, after security forces raided his home. That arrest was related to a video message he posted on Instagram in the days leading up to the anniversary of the state killing of Jina Amini. The arrest involved the use of excessive force.
