Hengaw – Wednesday, August 13, 2025

The Iranian judiciary has rejected the conditional release request of Kurdish political prisoner Mashallah Karami, from Bijar, a member of the justice-seeking families and and father of Mohammad Mehdi (Komar) Karami, executed during the “Women, Life, Freedom” (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) uprising.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Monday, August 11, 2025, Branch 12 of the Alborz Province Court of Appeals denied the request for conditional release of Karami, who is being held in Karaj Central Prison.

Karami’s lawyer had previously stated that his client had served more than half of his sentence, making him legally eligible for conditional release.

Following the court’s approval to merge his sentences, Karami was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison. He had earlier been sentenced in two separate cases to a total of five years and three months.

On January 21, 2025, Branch 12 of the Alborz Court of Appeals sentenced him to one year in prison and ordered the confiscation of his home and vehicle on charges of “money laundering” and “acquiring illicit property.”

In August 2024, Branch 102 of the Nazarabad Criminal Court (Second) had also sentenced him to eight years and ten months in prison, a fine of 1.9 billion tomans, and the confiscation of assets on the same charges.

In September 2024, in another part of his case, the Alborz Court of Appeals sentenced him to three years and seven months in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion” and to eight months for “propaganda against the state.”

It is noteworthy that on May 20, 2024, the Karaj Revolutionary Court had sentenced Karami to five years in prison for “assembly and collusion” and one year for “propaganda against the state.”

Karami was arrested on August 22, 2023, after security forces raided his home, confiscating his mobile phone and other personal belongings, before transferring him to Karaj Central Prison.

His 21-year-old son, Mohammad Mehdi (Komar) Karami, also from Bijar, was arrested during the “Women, Life, Freedom” uprising. Along with Mohammad Hosseini, he was accused in the case known as the “murder” of Basij member Rouhollah Ajamian, subjected to severe torture, sentenced to death, and executed at dawn on January 7, 2023.
