Hengaw – Saturday, September 13, 2025

Maryam Shahraki, a prisoner serving a sentence for financial charges in Kachouei Prison in Karaj, died as a result of medical negligence, misdiagnosis, and the authorities’ refusal to transfer her to a hospital. She is the second woman to die in Iranian prisons this year under such circumstances.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on the morning of Saturday, September 13, 2025, Shahraki — a mother of two young children — died after prison medical staff failed to provide adequate care and prevented her transfer to a hospital.

Despite suffering severe chest pain, the prison doctor and nurse on duty misdiagnosed her condition as a stomach problem, prescribed only a few pills, and sent her back to the ward. She later died due to this negligence.

Shahraki’s husband is also imprisoned in Karaj on financial charges. According to Hengaw’s documentation, at least two women have died in Iranian prisons since the beginning of 2025 due to lack of medical care — one in Qarchak Varamin Prison and another in Kachouei Prison in Karaj.
