Kurdish political prisoner Mahmoud Sadeghi denied furlough as he nears yen years in detention

Hengaw – Monday, October 13, 2025
Mahmoud Sadeghi, a Kurdish political prisoner from Kamyaran and the brother-in-law of executed political prisoner Heydar Ghorbani, has been denied furlough by Iranian authorities as he approaches the tenth year of his imprisonment.
According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Sadeghi, who is currently held in Sanandaj Central Prison (Sine), has served eight years, eleven months, and twenty-six days of his sentence without being granted a single day of leave.
A source close to the family told Hengaw that Sadeghi is suffering from serious psychological distress as a result of prolonged imprisonment and constant pressure from intelligence agencies.
The source added that, last year, judicial authorities had set bail of one trillion rials (approximately 100 billion tomans) as a condition for temporary furlough, but the process was later obstructed after authorities tied it to the consolidation of his two cases—a condition that has yet to be fulfilled due to deliberate interference by security bodies.
Hengaw had previously reported that Sadeghi has repeatedly requested a transfer to Kamyaran Prison, but his appeals have been systematically blocked by intelligence authorities acting through prison officials.
In February 2020, Branch 1 of the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Saeedi, sentenced him to 25 years in prison on charges of “assisting in rebellion (baghi).” Earlier, in October 2019, Branch 1 of the Kurdistan Criminal Court had sentenced him to 30 years in prison on charges of “aiding and abetting murder” and “collaboration with the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI).”
Mahmoud Sadeghi was arrested on October 16, 2016 at his home in Kamyaran, along with his brother-in-law, Heydar Ghorbani, who was later executed. Following his arrest, he was subjected to three months of psychological and physical torture at the Sanandaj Intelligence Detention Center before being transferred to Kamyaran Prison. Five months later, he was moved to Sanandaj Central Prison, where he remains to this day.
