Hengaw — Tuesday, November 18, 2025

Afarin Mohajer, an Iranian–American dual national, has spent more than seven weeks in detention in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, where she remains without access to due process and under complete uncertainty.

Based on information obtained by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mohajer, who normally resides in Los Angeles in the United States, has now spent 51 days in custody. Sources report that she is being held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison under unclear circumstances, and her legal status remains unknown as of late November 2025.

Mohajer was detained on Monday, 29 September 2025, shortly after landing at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Airport. Security forces held her at the airport and subsequently transferred her to Evin Prison.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has a long record of detaining dual nationals and using them as leverage in foreign policy disputes. There are growing concerns that Mohajer may become the latest victim of this practice, often described as “hostage diplomacy.”
