Hengaw – Thursday, June 4, 2026

Homaira Sharifi, an Afghan national detained during Iran’s January 2026 protests and currently held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Iranian judiciary. The political prisoner has attempted suicide at least twice while in detention amid deteriorating physical and psychological conditions and a lack of adequate medical care.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Sharifi was recently notified of her five-year prison sentence inside Evin Prison. Details regarding the charges against her and the court branch that issued the ruling remain unknown due to a lack of judicial transparency. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

Sources report that Sharifi suffers from a skin condition and severe psychological distress resulting from the conditions of her detention. Prison authorities have denied her access to specialized medical treatment and adequate healthcare.

According to informed sources, Sharifi does not possess identity documents. Since her transfer to Evin Prison, she has attempted suicide twice, with the most recent incident occurring last week.

Sharifi was arrested during last year’s protests and was initially transferred to Qarchak Prison. On February 16, 2026, she was transferred from Qarchak Prison to the women’s ward of Evin Prison, where she has remained in detention ever since.
