Hengaw – Saturday, June 13, 2026

Ameneh Beiraghdary Karahroudi, a retired teacher and political prisoner held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, has suffered a severe nervous breakdown and is in deteriorating physical and psychological condition while serving an eight-month prison sentence.

Information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights shows that Beiraghdary, a 61-year-old mother of four, has been facing difficult conditions since being re-arrested despite having previously been released on bail of four billion tomans.

The prosecutor of Fariman encountered Beiraghdary in public on May 2, 2026, and warned her for leaving her home. Later that same day, she was re-arrested on the grounds that she had allegedly violated restrictions imposed following her release.

Sources familiar with the case state that when Beiraghdary and her son, Iman Anbaei, were released on bail, the prosecutor unlawfully warned them that their bail would be revoked if they left Fariman.

The re-arrest had severe consequences for the family. Shortly afterward, her husband, Ali Anbaei, suffered a stroke and fell into a coma. He remains hospitalized at Ghaem Hospital in Mashhad.

Authorities initially agreed to release Beiraghdary under electronic monitoring because of her husband's critical condition. However, following opposition from the prosecutor and the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the arrangement was revoked. She was granted only three days of furlough before being returned to prison.

Beiraghdary was sentenced to four years of suspended imprisonment and one year of discretionary imprisonment. After accepting the verdict, the enforceable portion of the sentence was reduced to eight months.

Her latest imprisonment stems from events on January 5, 2025, when police and IRGC intelligence forces raided the family's home in Fariman. During the operation, Beiraghdary, her son Iman Anbaei Farimani, and her daughter were arrested on accusations of “leading protests.”

While her daughter was released after several hours, Beiraghdary and her son, who suffers from bone marrow cancer, were transferred to an IRGC intelligence detention facility in Mashhad, where they were subjected to severe physical and psychological torture.

They were later transferred to Vakilabad Prison and denied family visits and telephone contact for 70 days.

Beiraghdary was temporarily released on bail on March 21, 2025. Her son was released sometime later under similar bail conditions and after the payment of an additional 100 million tomans in cash.

According to informed sources, Iman Anbaei's health has deteriorated significantly since his release. The effects of torture and continued pressure from security agencies have aggravated his bone marrow cancer.

Beiraghdary was previously arrested in 2017 on charges of “acting against national security” and “disturbing public opinion.” She spent 210 days in Vakilabad Prison before being released.
