Kurdish wrestling champion Hamid Mohammadzadeh detained, whereabouts unknown

Four days after the detention of Hamid Mohammadzadeh, a prominent Kurdish figure in traditional Chukheh wrestling in North Khorasan province, no information has emerged about his whereabouts.
According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Iranian security forces raided Mohammadzadeh’s home and detained him on July 4, 2026, without presenting a warrant. He was taken to an undisclosed location.
Despite daily inquiries by Mohammadzadeh’s family with judicial and security authorities in Ashkhaneh, officials have not provided clear information about the reason for his detention, possible charges or where he is being held.
Mohammadzadeh is from the village of Biar in Ashkhaneh county, North Khorasan province. He is a prominent and popular athlete in Chukheh wrestling, a traditional form of wrestling practiced in the Khorasan region.
