17-year-old Turkish teenager sentenced to prison over January protests

A 17-year-old Turkish boy, identfied as Amirali Ghajari, who was detained in connection with Iran’s January 2026 protests has been sentenced to three years in prison and additional penalties.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Amirali Ghajari was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court in Qazvin to three years’ imprisonment and eight months of compulsory community service with the municipality.

Ghajari was arrested in February 2026 in connection with his participation in the January protests. He spent eight days in the custody of the Intelligence Ministry and a further 11 days in hospital before being released on bail.

Ghajari was subjected to severe beatings and torture while in detention. He was later released on temporary bail pending legal proceedings.
