Mehdi Savarolia sentenced to six years in prison over January protests

The Iranian judiciary has sentenced Mehdi Savarolia, detained during the January 2026 protests and currently held at Karaj Central Prison, to six years in prison and additional penalties.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 2 of the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced Savarolia to five years for “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security” and one year for “propaganda against the state,” under a ruling recently communicated to him.

The court also imposed additional penalties of a two-year travel ban, a two-year ban on membership in social groups and organizations, and a two-year ban from government and public-sector employment and services.

Under Article 134 of Iran’s Islamic Penal Code, the most severe sentence, five years in prison, will be enforceable.

IRGC Intelligence forces arrested Savarolia in Karaj on January 7, 2026, and transferred him to Karaj Central Prison. His trial was held before Branch 2 of the Karaj Revolutionary Court in July 2026.
