Marziyeh Mashhadi sentenced to seven years in prison following January protest arrest

Iranian authorities have sentenced Marziyeh Mashhadi, who is imprisoned at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, to seven years and one day in prison following her arrest during the January 2026 protests.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mashhadi was recently transferred from the "Aramesh" ward of Vakilabad Prison to Ward 1 of the prison.

The Iranian judiciary convicted Mashhadi on the fabricated charge of "communicating with media outlets affiliated with Israel" and sentenced her to seven years and one day of discretionary imprisonment.

Authorities arrested Mashhadi during the January 2026 protests for participating in anti-government demonstrations and on allegations that she had communicated with foreign media outlets. She was subsequently transferred to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, where she remains in custody.
