January protest detainee Ali Rezaei sentenced to prison in Amol

Ali Rezaei, a 28-year-old man from Amol who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, has been sentenced in two separate cases to three years and 10 months of imprisonment and an additional one-year suspended prison term by the Revolutionary Court in Amol.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Rezaei was sentenced in the first case by the Amol Revolutionary Court in Mazandaran province to three years and 10 months in prison.

In a separate case related to social media posts and stories he shared about the 2023 death of Armita Geravand, Rezaei was sentenced to an additional one-year suspended prison term.

Rezaei was arrested on January 5, 2026, and held for four months in the quarantine section of Amol Prison. His family had no information about his whereabouts or condition for approximately two weeks following his arrest.

Sources familiar with the case said Rezaei was severely beaten during his arrest and interrogation, resulting in a broken nose. He later went on hunger strike to protest the torture, inhumane treatment and pressure he faced while in detention.

Rezaei was denied access to a lawyer of his choosing throughout his detention and interrogation.
