January protest detainee Seyed Javad Mousavi imprisoned to serve five-year sentence in Birjand

Seyed Javad Mousavi, who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, has been taken to Birjand Prison to begin serving a five-year prison sentence.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mousavi was taken into custody on August 15, 2026, after being summoned to the Sentence Enforcement Office of the Birjand Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office.

Mousavi was previously sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to one year in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the state,” two years for “insulting Khomeini,” and five years for “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security,” amounting to a total of eight years in prison.

Under Iran’s sentencing rules for multiple convictions, the most severe sentence of five years is enforceable.

Mousavi was arrested by Iranian security forces in Birjand on January 6, 2026, and was later released pending judicial proceedings after securing bail.
