Hangaw’s report on the human rights violations and sentence rulings for the month of January 2017 in Kurdistan

Hangaw : intends on issuing a monthly report entitled ‘Pawan’ on the human rights violations and sentences in Kurdistan in order to raise more awareness to the widespread incarcerations and violations.

According to the statistics recorded in the statistical Center of human rights violations by Hangaw, since last December the prison sentences handed out in Kurdistan is 1668 month, a death sentence, a two years probations and 20 lashes imposed on 20 Kurdish citizens.

Hangaw also reports that in the last month alone, 15 Kurds were sentenced to a total of 1383 months imprisonment for their political activities. Four Kurds were sentenced to a total of 240 months in prison for their religious beliefs and a civil activist was sentenced to 36 months in prison, while a labour activist was sentenced to 12 months in prison and a political activist was sentenced to death by hanging and another was sentenced to 20 lashes.

This report indicates that the number of incarcerations and sentences have increased substantially compared to last year this time where only two Kurdish activists were sentenced to 10-years in prison.

According to recorded records from Hangaw, in the last year alone 81-Kurdish activities were sentenced to 284 years in prison and 7-religious and political activities were sentenced to death.
