Hengaw: A prisoner from Maku, who is being held in the city's central prison, set himself on fire in protest of his uncertainty, and his physical condition is reported to be critical.
According to a report, on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, a 38-year-old prisoner, identified as Mohammad Derafshi, set himself on fire in Maku Central Prison in protest of his eight years of judicial uncertainty.
Hengaw was informed that Mohammad Derafshi was on a week-long hunger strike, and when the prison officials had not heeded his demands, he set himself on fire.
A source close to Derafshi's family told Hengaw: "Mohammad Derafshi was taken to Khomeini Hospital in Urmia after self-immolation due to his serious physical condition, and he is still receiving medical treatment.
Mohammad Derafshi, 38, who is married, has two children, and is a resident of "Mullah Hassan" village in Maku, was detained on charges of smuggling 8 years ago in a joint case along with two other citizens, who are brothers, named Farzandeh Shams and Siddiq Shams. He has been in uncertainty since then in Maku Central Prison without the right to leave.
