A 17-year-old girl, Fatemeh Mohammadpanahi, from Sardasht, has been murdered by members of her own family on the pretext of what they termed "honor”. Not only was she considered a victim of child marriage, but she was also forced into this marriage.
According to a report received by the Hengaw organization for Human Rights, on the evening of Friday, September 29th, 2023, Fatemeh Mohammadpanahi, a 17-year-old girl from Sardasht, was killed by her two half-brothers, (A.M.) and (B.M.), using firearms, allegedly in the name of honor.
Some sources have also reported that "S.M.," her husband, was complicit in Fatemeh's murder, collaborating with her half-brothers. This matter is currently under investigation by Hengaw.
According to available resources, this victim of forced child marriage, who was only 16 at the time, with the pressure exerted by her family, was forced to marry her cousin.
Most recently, her coerced husband assaulted her with severe physical abuse and beatings. As a result, Fatemeh Mohammadpanahi had sought refuge with her parents about a month before her murder.
In a report in the most recent days, Hengaw stated that during the first six months of the current solar year, at least 52 cases of female fatalities, 20 of which were honor killings, were registered in Iran.
Based on statistics recorded by the Hengaw organization for the Human Rights Center for Statistics and Documentation, during the past seven months, at least six cases of femicide, all of which were honor killings, were registered in Urmia province (West Azerbaijan), with three of them being under 18 years old.
