Execution of Political Prisoner Geda Ali Sabermotlaq in Lakan Prison, Rasht
Hengaw: Friday, December 1, 2023
The death sentence of Geda Ali Sabermotlaq, a 62-year-old political prisoner and supporter of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran, was carried out in Lakan Prison, Rasht.
According to reports obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Saturday, November 25, 2033, the death sentence of Geda Ali Sabermotlaq was carried out at Lakan Prison in Rasht.
Geda Ali Sabermotlaq was arrested on August 28, 1981, for alleged involvement in the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran and the murder of an Islamic Republic official. He was released after a few years, due to insufficient evidence.
Sabermotlaq returned to Iran in 2020, only to face re-arrest by security agencies. Despite the passage of almost 40 years and a lack of transparency in the legal process, he received the death penalty for the same case.
Following the issuance of the death sentence in 2020, Gada Ali Sabermutlaq engaged in a hunger strike lasting more than a month to protest the verdict.
Alarming statistics reported by Hengaw reveal that, since the beginning of 2023, at least 24 political and ideological prisoners have been executed in Iranian prisons. The international community's silence on such matters has emboldened the Islamic Republic to intensify execution sentences, particularly targeting political and ideological prisoners.
Hengaw urgently calls upon the international community and nations committed to fundamental human rights and the right to life to break their silence and respond to this grave situation.
