Abbas Darris and his younger brother Mohsen Darris, two Arab political prisoners from Mahshahr and among those arrested in November 2018, were sentenced to a total of sixteen years in prison by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. These two brothers have spent the last four years in prison.
According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, recently, 50-year-old Darris was sentenced to 14 years in prison by Branch Three of the Criminal Court of Khuzestan province for the charge of "intentional murder" and "carrying and possessing weapons" and Mohsen Darris, 32 years old, sentenced to two years in prison for "possessing weapons".
Abbas Darris was previously sentenced to death by the first branch of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court in Mahshahr for the charge of "moharebeh" (War against god). Also, at this stage, Mohsen Darris was acquitted of the previous charge of Moharebeh.
In this regard, Fereshteh Tabanian, the lawyer of Abbas and Mohsen Darris, while pointing out that "there is no evidence of Abbas Darris’s involvement in this case", continued: "However, the resumption of the proceedings regarding the death sentence of my client, Abbas Darris, is continuing in the supreme court."
Fereshte Tabanian had previously emphasized that the family of this former member of the special unit in Mahshahr had consented to stop the death sentence of Abbas and Mohsen Darris on the charge of murdering a government armed force named Reza Sayadi and there is no private plaintiff's case.
Abbas and Mohsen Darris, two months after their arrest, were captured on camera under severe torture in December 2020, and their forced confessions about the murder of a government armed force named Reza Sayadi were aired on television.
These two brothers were arrested on December 17, 2019, by IRGC intelligence forces in Mahshahr. They were first transferred to Mahshahr Central Prison and in November 2022 to Sepidar Prison in Ahwaz. Abbas and Mohsen Darris were arrested on charges of participating in the November 2018 protests in Chamran town of Mahshahr city, during which at least 100 protesters were killed by Iranian government armed forces, according to the New York Times.
