Ghazal Masoumshahi, a Kurdish student activist, sentenced to 18 months in prison

Hengaw : A Kurdish student activist and former member of the Central Council of the Islamic Association of Progressive Students at Amirkabir University of Technology has been sentenced to prison and fined for protesting the crash of the Ukrainian Plane by IRGC  in 2020.

According to a report received by Hengaw Human Rights Organization, during the past few days, Ghazal Masoum Shahi, a student activist from Kermanshah, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and 3 million Tomans ($120) fine by 26th Branch of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tehran, headed by Judge Iman Afshari, on charges of "spreading false information on the Internet” which  her  sentence has been suspended for 4 years.

According to the sentence, this Kurdish activist is required to appear in the " Holy Shrine Defenders’ graveyard "  5 times during the 4-year suspended sentence , and also visit the IRGC office each season and obtain permission from the court to travel abroad.

Ms. Masoumshahi's positions on social media, especially Twitter, regarding the crash of  the Ukrainian plane by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps ( IRGC) are what she has been charged with . She has  also been acquitted of charges such as "conspiracy against national security" and "propaganda against the regime."

Ghazal Masoumshahi was summoned to 26th Branch of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 , without prior notice, and was charged with  "conspiracy against national security" and "propaganda against the regime."

A Ukrainian passenger plane was shot down by two Revolutionary Guards missiles shortly after take-off from Tehran International Airport on the morning of January 9,202, killing all 176 people on board.
