Urmia Prison: Six suicide attempts in prison with one dead

Hengaw: During the past few days at least six detainees have tried to commit suicide in the central prison of Urmia. One of them died.

According to the received report to Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, a prisoner in Urmia central prison named Karim Khajepour died in Khomeini hospital after committing suicide.

On October 19, 2020, Karim Khajepour and few other prisoners from ward 1 and 2 were transferred to a secure ward after a fight. He committed suicide at the same day by swallowing glass pieces and cutting himself and was transferred to a hospital outside of the prison.

Four other prisoners from the same ward named Hojjat Delaram, Babak Soufi, Touhid Ghaznavi and Milad (his last name is not known) have started a fight with other prisoners after Karim Khajepour's suicide act. They were transferred to solitary confinement.

These four prisoners have tried to commit suicide on October 20 as a form of protest for being transferred to solitary confinement.

Hengaw sources have declared that the prison guards have beaten them with batons. They have received no medical treatment until this news have been published.
Hengaw had previously reported that another prisoner named Adel Mokarram, a political prisoner in Urmia central prison, has tried to commit suicide.
