A report on the execution of 21 prisoners over 11 days in Shiraz Central Prison

Between September 15 and September 25, 2024, at least 21 prisoners, including one under-aged prisoner, four Baloch prisoners, two Kurdish prisoners, two Afghan nationals, and two Lor prisoners were executed in Shiraz Central Prison (Adelabad Prison). These prisoners had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on charges such as premeditated murder and drug-related charges.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, at dawn on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the death sentences of Rasoul Shenbandi, a resident of the Golkoob district of Shiraz, and Akbar Saadi-Khani, a resident of the Sarhad district of the same city, were carried out in Adilabad Central Prison in Shiraz. Rasoul Shenbandi had been arrested seven years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Akbar Saadi-Khani had been sentenced to death nine years ago for "premeditated murder."

On Monday, September 23, 2024, the death sentences of four prisoners named Fardin Ahmadi, a Lor citizen from Mamasani, Hossein Nejat, and Mohammadreza Nejat, both from Shiraz and Amin Shahabi, a Kurdish man from Ilam, were also carried out in the central prison of this city. These four prisoners had previously been arrested and sentenced to death for premeditated murder.

Continuing the wave of executions at Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, three prisoners named Sepehr Norani, Kamran Heydari, and Taher Arezomand, along with another prisoner from Shiraz identified as Shahin Salami, were executed in this prison for premeditated murder.

Additionally, on Monday, September 16, 2024, the death sentences of at least two Baloch prisoners named Abdoljalil Ehsani, 33, from Sarbaz, and Yahya Zargari, 32, from Iranshahr, Sistan and Baluchistan, who had previously been sentenced to death for drug-related offenses, were carried out in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz.

At the same time, the death sentence of a prisoner named Mehdi Jahanpour, 23, a Lor man from Firouzabad, Fars province, who had been sentenced to death for premeditated murder when he was under 18 years old, was carried out without notifying his family or allowing them a final visit.

Mehdi Jahanpour, born on December 8, 2002, was arrested in April 2019 at the age of 16 for premeditated murder and sentenced to death by the Iranian Judiciary. He is the second underaged prisoner executed in Iranian prisons in 2024.

On the same day, the death sentences of two Afghan nationals named Abdullah Abdolsamad and Mobasher (last name unknown), who had previously been sentenced to death for premeditated murder and drug-related charges, were carried out along with three other prisoners named Amir Naderzadeh and Sajad Fadaei for premeditated murder, and Behzad Bagheri, from Kermanshah, for drug-related charges.

On Sunday, September 15, 2024, the death sentences of at least two Baloch prisoners named Sasan Beneh / Beygzadeh, 33, from Sarbaz and resident of Iranshahr, and Saeed Khajeh Heydari, 30, from Kahnooj, Kerman province, along with an Arab prisoner from Ahvaz identified as Hossein Maqami, were also carried out in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz. These three prisoners had previously been sentenced to death for drug-related charges.
