Hengaw verifies identities of 330 protest victims in Tehran Province

More than one month after the widespread and violent crackdown on protesters and civilians across Iran, Hengaw has verified the identities of 330 individuals killed in Tehran Province during the recent protests.

This report was compiled following a detailed verification process based on documented information available to Hengaw.

According to Hengaw’s findings, at least 170 of those killed — representing 51.5 percent of the total victims in Tehran Province — were originally from 21 other provinces but were residing in Tehran Province at the time of their deaths.

Overview of verified victims in Tehran Province:

  • At least 22 children were among the identified victims
  • At least 40 women were killed
  • At least 22 university students lost their lives
  • At least 7 Kurdish followers of the Yarsan faith were killed
  • At least 8 individuals from the sports community were killed

Ethnic breakdown of identified victims in Tehran Province

Among victims belonging to national and ethnic minorities, Hengaw has documented:

  • At least 84 Kurds
  • At least 29 Turks
  • At least 21 Gilaks
  • At least 19 Lors
  • At least 4 Talysh
  • At least 3 Baloch

Hengaw warns of the scale and gravity of crimes committed by the Islamic Republic of Iran during the recent protests. Based on information received, the organization assesses that the security situation in the aftermath of the crackdown remains critical in Tehran Province and across the country.

Hengaw calls on civil society and political actors in Iran and internationally to document these crimes with particular care and to remain vigilant against efforts to shift blame onto protesters through state-driven propaganda.
