Iran executes at least 67 prisoners during July 2026

Iranian authorities executed at least 67 prisoners, including nine political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, during July 2026. Compared with the same period last year, the number of executions fell by at least 29, representing a 30 percent decrease. Hengaw documented at least 96 executions in Iranian prisons during July 2025.

The Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights has verified the identities of all 67 prisoners executed in Iranian prisons during the month.

Among those executed were two women. Setayesh Mohammadipour, from Jahrom, was executed in Shiraz Prison on drug-related charges, while Azam Gerami, from Yasuj, was executed in Yasuj Prison after being convicted of “premeditated murder.”

Hengaw also documented the execution of one Baloch child offender during the month. Meysam Irandegani, 18, was executed for an offense committed when he was 16 years old.

Only eight of the 67 executions documented in July—12 percent of the total—were officially announced by Iranian authorities or judiciary-affiliated media outlets. Hengaw also documented the secret execution of seven prisoners, who were put to death without prior notice to their families or the opportunity for a final visit.Two prisoners were publicly executed.

Execution of nine political prisoners

At least nine political prisoners, prisoners of conscience, and individuals arrested during the January 2026 protests and the Women, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement were executed by Iranian authorities in July. They had been sentenced to death on charges including "waging war against God" (moharebeh), espionage, and other national security-related offenses.

They were:

1. Mohieddin Abdollahi, a Kurdish prisoner of conscience from Javanrud, executed at Kermanshah Central Prison on July 14, 2026.

2. Hossein Palani Jaf, a Kurdish prisoner of conscience from Sarpol-e Zahab, executed at Kermanshah Central Prison on July 14, 2026.

3. Mohammad Amini Dehaghani, arrested during the January 2026 protests, executed at Isfahan Central Prison on July 15, 2026.

4. Aref Khoshkar, detained during the Women, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement, executed at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj on July 15, 2026.

5. Erfan Esfandiari, arrested during the January 2026 protests, executed at Isfahan Central Prison on July 19, 2026.

6. Gol Mohammad Mohammadi, an Afghan national arrested during the January 2026 protests, executed at Isfahan Central Prison on July 19, 2026.

7. Mehdi Khanki, executed at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj on July 22, 2026, after being convicted of espionage for Israel.

8. Abolfazl Sepahi, arrested during the January 2026 protests, publicly executed in Isfahan on July 28, 2026.

9. Amir Hossein Safari, also arrested during the January 2026 protests, publicly executed in Isfahan on July 28, 2026.

Breakdown of executions by charges

Prisoners convicted of “premeditated murder” accounted for the largest share of executions in July, with 35 cases, representing 52 percent of the total. They were followed by 22 prisoners executed on drug-related charges. Nine political prisoners, prisoners of conscience, and individuals convicted of espionage were also executed during the month.

According to Hengaw's data, at least 22 Persian prisoners were executed during July, accounting for 33 percent of all recorded executions. The month also saw the execution of 10 Kurdish prisoners, ten Turks, six Lors, and five Baloch prisoners.

Breakdown of executions by province

Isfahan Province recorded the highest number of executions during July, with 10 cases. In total, executions were carried out in prisons across 24 provinces. After Isfahan, the highest numbers were recorded in East Azerbaijan and Fars provinces, with eight executions each.
