108 women committed suicides in Iranian Kurdistan from March 2020 to March 2021

Hengaw : on the eve of International Women's Day on March 8, Hengaw publishes an annual statistical report on the suicide of Kurdish women , which shows that the number of suicides has increased compared to last year.

According to the statistics registered in the Statistics and Documentation Data Center of Henagw Human Rights Organization, from March 2020 to March 2021, at least 108 women in different cities of Iranian Kurdistan committed suicide and ended their lives, the complete details of which are registered by Hengaw .

Of the 108 women who lost their lives during this period, 30 were under the age of 18 which was equivalent to 28% of all cases . 10 of whom were under the age of 15.

According to this report, the highest rate of suicide was recorded in Kurdistan province, and family disputes with 81 cases  (75%) was the main reason .  During this period, at least 4 girls committed suicide and ended their lives due to family pressure on and forced marriage .

 

Distribution of cases by province:

Ilam Province: 17  Case equivalent to 16 % of Total cases.

Kermanshah province: 25 cases equivalent to 23% of total cases

Kurdistan Province (Sanandaj): 36 Case equivalent to 33% of all total cases.

West Azerbaijan Province (Urmia): 30 Case equivalent to 28% of total cases.

 

Reason of suicide :

Family disputes: 81 cases, equivalent to 75% of all cases.

Poverty and unemployment: 10 cases equivalent to 9% of Total cases.

Unknown: 10 cases equivalent to 9% of Total cases.

Depression: 3 cases equivalent to 3% of Total cases.

Forced marriage: 4 cases equivalent to 4% of Total cases.

 

Suicide methods:

Hanging: 62 cases

Overdose : 20 cases

Falling from height: 8 cases

Self-immolation: 16 cases

Shotgun : 2 cases
